Former Real Madrid player Toni Kroos admitted he was never a fan of the club after a photo of him at the age of seven in the Spanish club's jersey went viral on social media.
The 35-year-old announced in May 2024 that he would retire from football after Germany's Euro 2024 campaign, which was held on home soil that year. The "Die Mannschaft" were eliminated in the quarter-finals by Spain.
"For some reason, I was wearing Luis Figo's Real Madrid shirt. I didn't realize how much it would benefit me," Kroos told Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo.
He continued: "I was never a Real Madrid fan, then this picture appeared on social media, and of course, all the Real Madrid fans were saying that he was a Real Madrid fan, that he had been wearing their shirt since he was seven years old. All of that is not true, but the picture helped me."
The newspaper pointed out that Kroos has always maintained that he is a fan of German club Werder Bremen.
