The Spanish National Court ruled in favor of Xabi Alonso, the current coach of Bayer Leverkusen, in a legal dispute with the tax authorities, who were demanding €288,507.58 for allegedly failing to declare personal income tax on payments received by his agent in 2012 from Real Madrid, for which he played at the time.
In a ruling issued Wednesday, the Administrative Arbitration Chamber of the National Court accepted the player's appeal against the 2021 decision of the Central Economic Administrative Court, which had in turn upheld the decision of the Regional Economic Administrative Court of Madrid.
The Regional Court's decision upheld the Tax Authority's claim to collect €168,083.06 in unpaid personal income tax for 2012, plus a subsequent fine of €120,424.52, for a total of €288,507.58.
The National Court explained that one of the reasons for accepting the appeal was that it blamed the administrative body for "exceeding" its authority by "attributing the amounts paid by the club to the player's agent as income from the player's work, on the basis that the agent represents the player and acts on his behalf and for his benefit."
It is worth noting that Alonso is close to returning to Real Madrid again, but this time as a coach.
