Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti praised his young players who helped the team come back to win 2-1 over Mallorca on Wednesday evening.
Real Madrid's victory postponed Barcelona's title celebrations and kept Real's slim hopes alive. However, despite two matches remaining, the team is four points behind leaders Barcelona, who have played one more game and will be crowned champions for their 28th time on Thursday if they beat rivals Espanyol.
"We didn't give up despite 12 players being injured, which is very rare," Ancelotti said in statements reported by Reuters. "We won the match thanks to the team's great fighting spirit and the players' outstanding performance. I've never seen a team shoot 40 times on goal like we did today."
He added, "We covered the absences of many players thanks to the exceptional effort made by all the players who participated today. If we had repeated that in other matches with the same spirit throughout the season, the team's progress would have been better."
Ancelotti confirmed that his focus will be on the Spanish capital until May 26, before leaving Real Madrid at the end of the season to take up the job as coach of the Brazilian national team.
"Whenever I sit on the bench at Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu, it's always been special for me. I leave with a sense of peace and serenity after having done what I was capable of, as my team tries to win until the last moment, just as we did today," he continued.
He concluded: "We believe in the importance of doing our best, winning what remains, and seeing what happens. They are bound to lose, but anything is possible. We will fight."
