The Swiss Football League (SFL) on Friday suspended Basel's title-winning midfielder, Taulant Xhaka, for one match for his misconduct during the club's celebrations on a balcony in a public square.
Xhaka made derogatory comments about other clubs (Zürich and Grasshopper) and also lit a fire in Basel last Sunday, according to the league.
The team had just won its first league title since 2017, and the sixth of the veteran's career, in his final season before retiring, and Xhaka referred to the emotions of winning the last title in an official apology he issued last Monday.
The Albanian international, the older brother of Swiss captain Granit Xhaka, was also fined $9,000 and must complete 18 hours of community service at a football project.
The 34-year-old Xhaka will miss Young Boys' visit next Sunday, but could return for a farewell match at the end of the season against Lucerne.
In addition to the apologies, the single judge also took into account the end of Taulant Xhaka's career in his ruling, according to the league.
The league added that he was suspended for only one match, and was given a larger fine and community service to compensate for the negative impact his behavior had on the public.
Basel had previously stated that Xhaka would face an internal disciplinary case.
